Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a proven treatment. In April 2005, the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) recognized the effectiveness of this therapy for 14 medical conditions listed below.


  • Embolism (air bubbles or gas in the blood that can reach the brain or lung);
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning (inhalation of smoke or exhaust gas);
  • Gas gangrene;
  • Crush injury, Compartment syndrome and other acute traumatic ischemias (where blood flow is reduced or stopped, as frostbite);
  • Decompression sickness;
  • Arterial insufficiencies : enhancement of healing in selected problem wounds such as diabetic foot ulcers;
  • Severe anemia (blood loss);
  • Intracranial abscess (pus in the brain);
  • Necrotizing soft tissue infections (flesh-eating disease);
  • Osteomyelitis (infection of the bone);
  • Delayed radiation injury (radiation burns that appears after cancer therapy);
  • Compormised grafts and flaps;
  • Acute thermal burn injury (caused by fire or electric heat sources);
  • Idiopathic Sudden sensorineural hearing loss.


HBOT is a new specialty of 50 years and we are far from having explored all the possibilities of this treatment. For more information on recognized indications, please consult the websites of the UHMS or Health Canada.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is sometimes used to treat many other diseases that are not officially recognized because of insufficient evidence. Several of these conditions are currently under serious research to evaluate the real effectiveness and benefits of HBOT.
