SPORT – INJURY AND PERFORMANCE

 

The exposure to a pressure between 2 and 3 times the atmospheric pressure in an oxygen-enriched (close to 100% oxygen) environment accelerates the healing of sports injuries related to musculoskeletal system, such as sprains the meniscus, muscle contusions, surgery and many others.

HBOT is particularly effective for the recovery of soft tissue injuries or bone fractures. Less muscle loss is observed (shorter postoperative convalescence) and the rehabilitation process gets faster. A study of soccer players in Scotland [1] shows that the recovery time following various types of injury (cartilage, muscle, ligament, tendon and other) can be reduced by 70% when HBOT is used in addition to physiotherapy.

Some professional and amateur athletes use HBOT to improve their endurance and speed recovery from fatigue following intense training. The benefits of this use have not been scientifically proven. Please note that HBOT is a natural treatment whose mechanisms of action are known and has very few side effects. However, this therapy involves risks associated with its use. It must be done by professionals with adequate training, in a controlled environment, and under the supervision of a physician.
